Bath your dog

Bathing your dog is a conventional method of grooming. It can keep your dog’s coat clean and healthy and remove dirt, parasites or other elements that may be stuck in the fur. Although dogs do not need to bathe every day, their fur, environment, and other factors can affect how often they bathe. Tell the vet how often your dog should be washed.

Before you start

Before you start bathing your dog, you must make some preparations. Proper preparation can make it easier for you and your dog to complete this process.

The bathtub is usually the easiest place to bathe the dog, although very small dogs may bathe in the sink. If you are going to use the bathtub at home, it may hurt your back and knees, leaving a mess of things to clean up. Some pet supply stores offer self-service dog wash basins, which you can use for a small fee. It is cheaper than buying a horseman, and you can avoid a mess at home.

If you choose to bathe your dog outside, remember that cold water is not fun for most dogs. In addition, cold water will not clean your dog. Make sure the weather is warm so your dog is not too cold, or put hot water so that your dog can take a hot bath.

what do you need

If you pay for the use of a self-service dog toilet, these supplies may be ready and available for you to use. If you bathe your dog at home, be sure to collect your supplies in advance so you don’t have to fight for something.

  • Soft, absorbent towels; beach towels are suitable for larger dogs and microfiber towels are great for absorption
  • Shampoo for dogs (should be soap-free); products with simple ingredients are usually best; oatmeal and aloe are great for itchy dogs
  • Brush and comb; choose the right tool for your dog’s coat
  • Bath mat or extra towels for your dog to stand after bathing
  • Eye lubricant (artificial tear ointment) or mineral oil (protect the eyes from shampoo)
  • Apron and/or old clothes for you (yes, you will get wet)

Get your dog wet

Brush the dog clean before taking a bath. Be sure to remove any tangles or mats, because once your dog is wet, these are difficult to handle. Then apply a strip of artificial tear ointment or a few drops of mineral oil on each eye. This helps protect the eyes from shampoo.

Soak your dog from head to toe with warm water. This is the best job if you use a hand-held sprayer, but you can also pour water from a pitcher or bucket. Before putting it on your dog, be sure to test the temperature on your arm.

Many dogs have waterproof coats, so thorough soaking is usually necessary to penetrate the hair. Be sure to avoid the inside of the eyes and ears. Your dog will instinctively want to shake the water off. Putting a hand on the dog’s head may help prevent this from happening.

Wash your dog’s hair

Apply shampoo to the dog’s coat. Avoid eyes, face and genital area. Use enough shampoo to create foam. Use a small amount of shampoo at a time to avoid overuse. One option is to mix two parts of shampoo with one part of water so that more shampoo can be used. Add the mixture to a spray bottle or large plastic cup for easy application. Remember to be careful around the face and eyes.

Scrub and massage

Rub, scrub, and massage your dog for a few minutes. You can use your fingers, just like washing your hair. Your dog might really like this part. Remember to wipe your feet clean. Ideally, you should let the shampoo stay on the dog’s coat for 10 to 15 minutes before washing, especially if it is a medicated shampoo. Take a moment to clean up your dog’s ears.

You can also use a rubber or plastic dog scrubbing tool, especially small dog beads for bathing. It provides an extra massage to your dog’s skin and helps to wash the hair.

Rinse your dog

Sprinkle some water on your dog’s coat, avoiding eyes and ears. Rinse the shampoo from the dog’s coat thoroughly. Shower heads are best for this; it takes longer to rinse with a cup, pitcher, or bucket.

Remember to thoroughly rinse your feet and any skin folds or cracks on your dog’s body. It is very important to remove all shampoo residue from the dog. After rinsing your dog with warm/hot water, use warm or slightly cool water to help remove shampoo residue and seal the pores.

Dry your dog

First, stand back and let your dog shake it a few times. Then, use a towel to dry the excess water on the dog’s coat. Put the towel on the ground and let your dog get it. Many dogs instinctively rub the towel and continue to shake off the water. Then, you can continue to dry it with a towel.

If your dog can tolerate it, you can try blow-drying. Be sure to use a dryer with very low or no heat. If you bathe your dog in a self-service tub, a forced hair dryer may appear. Be careful, these dryers are powerful. Only turn it to a height that your dog can tolerate, and keep it away from your face, eyes, and ears.

Once your dog is completely dry, brush off the coat thoroughly. Wipe off the oil film around your dog’s eyes with a damp cloth. Try not to let your dog out until it is dry, otherwise, you will soon have a dirty dog.

Prevent your dog from having problems during the bath

Some dogs may just absolutely hate bathing. It may feel like a wrestling match, or it may be so messy and time-consuming that you want to give up. If this is the case, it may be time to visit a beautician. For some varieties with long hair that need to be cut regularly, it is recommended to use a professional beautician. If you decide to take a bath at home, keep trying and arm yourself with dog food.
